The Super Subs Science Team
The Super Subs Science Team
The Super The Super Subs Are Coming to A School Near You!Who are the Super Subs? Why would you want the Super Subs to come to your school?
Bob Barboza created the Super Subs after he retired from thirty years of teaching. You would think that Bob had enough of teaching and he should just retire.
The Super Subs is just a pure labor of love. This program is designed for teachers that love to teach. The Super Subs are a group of community members that have multiple talents. They take over a school for one day. This allows the principal to use the day planning with the regular teachers at the school. It allows the students to get to know members of the community and to learn important skills that lead to the world of work. Yes, we have fun and motivate the students through the roof. We can do all of this without wasting the students time or drifting too far from state content standards.
The Super Subs can perform their magic for one day. The regular teachers have to motivate students all year long. However, we need to start somewhere.
Barboza recalled how students used would treat substitute teachers poorly. He always felt bad for the subs and thought that they could use a complete makeover. Thus, he created the Super Subs.
Super Subs are teachers, administrators, musicians, artists, animators, technology experts, designers, scientists, mathematicians, community leaders, visual and performing arts specialist, and journalist. This group will vary according to the assignments. At time we will even show up at a school with a bus full of movie making equipment.
We use resources from Jr. Medical School, Jr. Law School, Jr. Business School, Super School University, Kid's Talk Radio, and PNN the Personal News Network. Students have opportunities to create world of work databases and to complete writing assignments using instant web publishing.
When the Super Subs arrive at school that choose five to ten students to become a virtual news team. This team records the events of the Super Sub Day and the entire day is published on Kid's Talk Radio, Teen TV, and PNN the Personal News Network. This allows everyone at the school to see what went on during the school day.
Super Subs are about getting everyone excited about teaching and learning. We demonstrate how to tap parent and community support to improve student learning. We are harnessing the energy and expertise that parents and community members can bring to school-improvement efforts.
The Super Subs wrote the book on inclusion. We want to work with students with special needs. In fact, we have found ways to include that in every aspect of the Super Sub Day.
When the Super Subs leave a school site, we leave behind a school journalist and or Kid's Talk Radio Journalist Team. The school team is trained and supported by Kid's Talk Radio and students continue to publish their stories throughout the school year.
One of our goals is to do more with hands on science experiments and science journalism. We created Jr. Medical School to help with our focus on science. We are exploring creative ways to get kids excited about science and to make a connection to the world of work.
How are the Super Subs funded?
At present, we are funded by PNN the Personal News Network and Super School Software. We have plans to partner with several other companies to make it possible for the Super Subs to provide fee services to more public and private school. The majority of our work is in the inner city schools. We have plans to reach other schools were our services will benefit students, teachers, and principals that need help in meeting the requirements of No Child Left Behind.
The Super Subs are in the national news. (George Lucas Edutopia Magazine".
The George Lucas Foundation has plans to publish the Super Sub Story in next issue of "Edutopia Magazine". They sent a reporter to cover the Super Subs in action a La Puente High School. The article has pictures of the event. You can find video and audio clips on PNN and Kid's Talk Radio.
Bob Barboza is a teacher on special assignment and founder of Kid's Talk Radio, Super Subs, Jr. Medical School, and Super School University. He is an educational consultant for the FileMaker Corporation and is a high motivational speaker at numerous national and local educational technology conferences.
Lauren Elliott is the founder and CEO of PNN, the Personal News Network. He is the creator of "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" and 21 other award winning software programs. Lauren Elliott is currently working with Bob Barboza on expanding Kid's Talk Radio and the Super Subs Programs.
